Tuning Out to Tune In

My whole life there’s been some sort of health or weight-loss dialogue running all the time ‘I should lose weight’, ‘I have to train’. From watching my weight to comfort eating, diet fads, exercise regimes, losing it, putting it on, emotional eating, stress, IBS, there was always some reason to be agonising over food or exercise.

After years of shoulds and have-to’s, I have learned that looking at things from a different perspective and a more holistic approach works much better for me. I posted lately about the unexpected things that have improved my health, fitness, weight-loss in recent years:

  • doing less
  • prioritising myself & me-time
  • sea swimming
  • daily stress management

  • minding my energy

  • choosing slower forms of exercise
  • tuning in to my body

  • listening to my intuition

  • doing things that light me up

  • spending time alone

  • saying no

  • surrounding myself with positive people

  • setting boundaries

  • controlling negative thoughts

  • goal setting

  • gratitude

  • journaling

More and more the conversation keeps coming back to tuning into ourselves, using our intuition, listening to the whispers of the body, so we don’t have to hear it scream. But its not always that easy, we all have so much going on, life is so busy, and we are listening to so many outside sources, the phone, TV, newspapers, other people that our clarity can be seriously impaired.

Eating unhealthy foods and negative thinking have the capacity to stress the body and mind and really have the capacity to take away our clarity and make it very difficult to tune in to that inner voice and make good decisions for ourselves.

Taking time out, reducing stress, feeding the body with lifeforce foods, fresh veg, fruit, wholegrains, good quality proteins & beneficial fats, eaten well so it’s digested well, all of this really allows us to clear the clutter and see the wood from the trees. In this clearer place its much easier to keep thoughts positive and grateful and to hear what the body needs in terms of self-care, healthy food, space etc.

So now I find myself in a place of intuitive eating & training where I listen to what I need on the day or in the moment, the stress is completely taken out of it and there’s serious freedom in it. I’m training less, eating the best quality and less of it, choosing me-time over constant distractions, spending time on the activities & people that light me up and feeling all the better for it.

Tuning out of the rat-race, we’re all busy, but we all have time for 5 mins to close a door, take a seat, take a deep breath, be grateful for something, say something nice to yourself. Little improvements to daily habits make for long lasting sustainable change over. We’ve the choice to keep going in one direction or the other, keep getting sicker or start getting healthier every single day, its an easy choice to make.
